TURN ASPIRATION INTO ACTION

Overmountain Advisors takes its name from a pivotal moment in early American history. The firm’s founder, Michael Walton, traces his ancestry to Robert Young, one of the so-called Overmountain Men—a loosely organized group of farmers, craftsmen, and traders living west of the Appalachian Mountains in the late 18th century.

When British forces posed an existential threat during the American Revolutionary War, these frontier communities did not wait for the coming adversity. Instead, they crossed the rugged Roan Highlands to confront the threat directly. Their decisive action led to victory at the Battle of Kings Mountain in 1780, an event widely regarded by historians as a turning point that shifted the momentum of the war.

Overmountain Advisors draws inspiration from this example of pragmatic, tactical, and indeed entrepreneurial leadership in an environment of volatility, uncertainty, ambiguity, and chaos to forge the future they hoped to see. Today’s energy, industrial, and infrastructure challenges similarly demand clear-eyed strategy, a willingness to engage with complexity, and the resolve to move decisively when established paths are no longer sufficient. The firm works with leaders who are prepared to cross difficult terrain—political, technical, or financial—to build durable solutions and long-term value.
